Is it possible to get an extended auto warranty on a used car?

Many used cars are offered with an extended auto warranty.

It is no longer uncommon for a used car to come with a warranty as part of the price. This used car warranty is extended beyond the original warranty.

As leasing has become more popular, dealers find themselves with well maintained cars being traded in. It is no longer a gamble to place a warranty on these well maintained, previously leased vehicles and it also helps to give a potential customer piece of mind. As a result most used car programs offer one as part of the price.

Other dealers may offer you a warranty for a used car at an additional cost. So, should you invest in it? Ask yourself these questions to determine the right answer for you.

  • How much does it cost?
  • Is the warranty through a reputable company?
  • Has the car undergone an inspection by a mechanic? If not, you must have this done. You need to know if expensive repairs are likely in the near future.
  • What is covered and for how long?
  • What specifically is not covered?
  • If the dealership will not offer a warranty on the used car then walk. They know something about the car that you don't know.
