A driver's education course will only teach you the basics.

Article of Interest

A Driver's education course is a good start but nothing can replace experience. It's a common thought amongst many drivers. Here's what one reader had to say:

It seems as though more and more people are becoming distracted and ignorant behind the wheel of an automobile. I find each day people are not looking before changing lanes or if they do look they assume you will get out of their way. What ever happened to respect for other drivers sharing the roadways?

Frank Riedl

It's true. As pointed out from the comments above, more and more people are distracted by cell phones, pda's, GPS systems, and more.

Yet many people believe that they are good drivers because they participated in a driver's education course. Many of these courses only require 10 hours or less of driving time and don't have to teach you how to drive in inclement weather.

Even worse, online courses are available in some states. That's right, a driver's education course that you do at home by yourself!!! How does this make anyone a better driver? Young people especially need to understand that driving is serious, and requires attention and the right attitude.

There are serious, defensive driving schools which actually want you to learn, not just push you through the system. It is a wise investment to spend time, and money, on a reputable course.

The extra money you pay for a defensive driving course will easily pay for itself in a reduction of insurance costs and the additional piece of mind that the proper training has been received.

If the approach is taken that driver's education is a waste of time, then new drivers get the message that all drivers are created equal, and driving is a right. These points are baseless. Some people need more practice, while others need an attitude adjustment before they get behind the wheel of a car.

The best way to make sure people respect one another on the road is through proper training.
