Where to look if you need a cheap used car.

You'll find a cheap used car in any of these places.

  • Check out a police auction. Repossessed cars are cheaper but likely not as well maintained. Ex police cars may also be available but don't forget that they've been driven hard.

  • Towing companies often have auctions. They sell off the cars that were not claimed.

  • Ex rental cars and cabs. Note, these cars are very often driven hard so make sure to have a mechanic check one out if you are interested.

  • Airport Cabs/limo (non stretched). These accumulate a lot of miles but they are mostly highway miles that are far easier on a car than city driving.

  • Public auctions. Check your local newspaper for dates and locations.

  • Dealers often have older trade-ins at the back of their lot. Take a walk around and see what they have available. Most new car dealerships make more money on a used car than a new car sale. Do your homework to make sure you're getting a good deal.

  • Government or military surplus vehicles. They often like to sell in bulk but it doesn't hurt to try. Great deals are available. Start by searching on the internet for locations, times etc.

  • Anyone looking to sell their car quickly. You'll be surprised how much you can save if someone is desperate to get rid of a car.

These tips will help you to find a cheap used car. However, it is usually best to pay a little more to protect yourself from having to pay large repair bills down the road. Always have the vehicle checked by a mechanic and perform a used vehicle history report on the car.
